Join NYC Skeptics in 2010

Dear NYC Skeptics Supporter,

A new year is almost upon us, but there is still time to show your support for New York City Skeptics and make your tax-deductible contribution for 2010. As an NYC Skeptics supporter, you know the difference a grassroots organization like ours can make. Please help us continue our efforts to promote science and critical thinking by renewing your membership or becoming a member today!

2010 was our most successful and celebrated year to date, with more NYC Skeptics programs and activities and an increased focus on "spreading the word" of science and skepticism to a larger audience:

  • February saw the launch of our official podcast, Rationally Speaking with hosts Massimo Pigliucci & Julia Galef. The podcast has been a tremendous success, and is now downloaded by almost 20,000 listeners each week.
  • The Northeast Conference on Science & Skepticism (NECSS) attracted 400 attendees and sold out for the second year in a row, bringing to town skeptical luminaries like James Randi, D.J. Grothe, David "Orac" Gorski, and the Skeptics Guide to the Universe "Rogues."
  • Our public lecture series hosted speakers like Professor Richard Wiseman, WNYC's Beth Fertig, and skeptical activist Simon Perry.
  • Our annual Darwin Day event attracted over 200 hundred attendees, and our second-annual "Skepticamp" event filled the house for the second year in a row.
  • Our monthly Meetup and Drinking Skeptically events are also going strong, providing an avenue for skeptics and critical thinkers of all stripes to socialize, network, and engage with each other.

And we're just getting started on 2011...! In January we will host the first of many live tapings of the Rationally Speaking podcast, and in just a couple of weeks we will open registration for NECSS 2011. The conference will be bigger and better than ever, with more speakers, more panels, and will be expanding to two days (and remember that NYC Skeptics members receive a discount on NECSS registration)!

As an all-volunteer organization our efforts are only possible because of the support we receive from our members. Please join us or renew your membership today. Thank you for your continued support and Happy New Year!

Save the date for NECSS 2011

Next year's Northeast Conference on Science and Skepticism will take place on April 9-10, 2011 in New York City. This will be our third annual conference, and it will bigger and better in every way -- with a larger venue, more speakers, and more events!

The conference will be expanding to two days of speaker presentations and panel discussions (Saturday and Sunday), with additional events and social gatherings taking place on Friday and Saturday evenings.

We're also thrilled to announce that our keynote speaker will be none other than the Bad Astronomer himself, Phil Plait! Dr. Plait will head up a stellar lineup of speakers and panelists, featuring both new faces and returning favorites (full list to be released shortly).

NECSS will be the first major skeptical conference of 2011, and it's not to be missed! We will once again be offering NYC Skeptics members special discounts on registration, so if you haven't yet joined NYC Skeptics please do so today!

For the latest news and updates, stay tuned to www.necsscon.org, our facebook page, and our twitter feed (@NECSS).

NECSS is a joint presentation of the New England Skeptical Society and New York City Skeptics.
